Teatro Alighieri

Teatro Dante Alighieri

The Dante Alighieri theatre  is the main theatre in Ravenna. It is located in the historic centre, at Via Mariani 2, 200 metres from the hotel.

The foundation stone of the new Alighieri Theatre was laid in September 1840, when the restoration of the old theatre was replaced by the construction of an entirely new work in an area that, although very central, had until then remained on the fringe of city life and therefore subject to degradation: the so-called Piazzetta degli Svizzeri (today Piazza Garibaldi).

The construction of the building was entrusted to the Venetians Tomaso and Giovanni Battista Meduna, who had recently completed the restoration of the famous La Fenice Theatre in Venice. Not dissimilar to the Venetian project, a neoclassical, highly scenic building was thus created.

During the inauguration on the evening of 15 May 1852, the new theatre was acclaimed as one of the best and best equipped in Italy.

Since then, many artists and personalities from all over the world have performed on its stage, from Gabriele D’Annunzio to the divine Maria Callas performing “La forza del destino” in 1954 to the present day with the famous conductor Riccardo Muti.
